A couple of ancient 60's and 70's Ski Club members and I were talking ski show photos the other day, and I got to thinking, "I wonder where all the movies "Paude" Millan used to shoot at the show are?" What a great night (and possible fund raising event) watching some of those outdoors shown on the side of the Yacht Club would be! I'd pay. The only better venue would be put the old bedsheet up behind the Pub, ala Polar Cream free movies of the past. Anyone got any ideas?

Gary, the swans also like to "race" kayaks. It was rather
scary when those swans would not let us alone. We decided it was safer to stop kayaking for the day. Swans can be very nasty and everyone should stay away from them if possible. They are just nice to look at but don't get too close.

Remember to not feed the wild animals and migratory birds. They need to stay migratory birds, Actually I'm for sending them far away to migrate as intended. Watch the swans around the 20-100 area. These 2 swans are very
aggressive towards dogs. They will swim 500 yards to get your dog, I've seen this repeatedly. Any dog in the water will loose the game with these swans.

I have a Floe 5000 VSD (vertical screw drive) boat lift that we are selling with a one year old Floe canopy. It has Floe's easy-level leg system, wheel kit for easy removal, 24 volt system, and solar panel for recharging. We use this for our Malibu V-Ride and it works great. Cost $9,500 new, but yours today for only $5,000. What a bargain!!!

Paige is now 8 and McKenna is 6. As all of you care for the health and well being of your families, so do Jill and I. There seems to be some disregard for the posted 25 MPH speed limit for Clear Lake especially in the area of the homes numbered 10 - 52.
Also, it appears the our Clear Lake guests should be reminded about the expected 25 MPH speed limit. An explanation of the need for their considerate driving may help them comprehend that many people do enjoy being safe at our lake when walking, running, and riding bikes.
Your considerations for the safety and enjoyment of all of us will be appreciated and help make Clear Lake an even nicer place.

Hello, just wanted to thank Sally M. for her house check service. Although we have a security system it cannot take the place of someone coming inside and checking individual rooms as well as the outside checks. Her service has already saved us a lot of money as they noticed we had a slight roof/shingle issue. Although it was a minor issue, but needed to be addressed before it caused major water damage and insurance hassles. They've also found some inside issues that needed attention.
No one likes to come up to surprises on Memorial weekend or any weekend for that matter. The thoroughness and attention to detail in her reporting gives us peace of mind throughout the off-season. Thanks again!

Also, I can highly recommend Preferred Cleaning Services for spring housecleaning. They are from Fremont and send 2 or 3 women who do a thorough job with their own supplies.

Marty,
Yes, our dog did a great job keeping the geese from our yard and had lots of fun doing it. No geese were hurt and they learned to stay away from our yard but they moved on to someone else's yard. It was a great way to keep geese away without hurting them.

Each spring here at my school in Indy, we would began to get large numbers of geese gathering on our soccer/lacrosse fields.
The kids would be carrying the dark green 'goo' from the playground and sports fields into the building on the carpet. We checked with the DNR and could find no quick resolve to eradicate the birds - there are a lot of small ponds and three or so smaller lakes around our neighboring area.
So we read DNR's website of http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3002.htm and found a solution ... and here it is for you to consider:
"Begin implementing daily goose harassment techniques (at least once in the mid-morning and once immediately prior to sunset or any time of day when geese are seen at the site, but not on a regular routine as geese will become accustomed to the schedule) in early February or as soon as geese are observed using the site to discourage geese from acclimating to the site."
Our custodians would bring in their dogs a couple of times a week and the dogs were the deterrents and finally the geese got tired of being chased and we were rid of the geese for the season.

I enjoy the wild life here at the lake too . But the geese are out of hand. Each adult poops 1.5
pounds per day. And if I want to go bare foot in my own yard, I should not have to slip and slide in goose poop. I truly doubt that the eagles are in danger- now if they'd just eat more geese......

For all the folks returning to the lake this summer there will be two new dining establishments in Angola for your enjoyment. Pint and Slice is opening soon on the downtown square. They will be serving Pizza by the slice or whole pies and beverage. Pint and Slice has another location in Fort Wayne near the TinCaps Ballpark and for those familiar, this will be a welcome addition to the Historic Downtown Square. Also, on the north end of town going up Wayne Street, TomPato's will be opening soon too. They are replacing the old Tony's Bistro and will have a similar menu but with their own twist. Both establishments are looking forward to serving everyone in the area with great food and beverage. Be sure to support your local businesses!

Mr. Hoagland. As in previous years there is a delay in approving Town Council Minutes in the spring. The town only publishes approved documents. Approval of minutes can only be made by of a quorum of the members who were present at that meeting. Hopefully at the May Town Council meeting the minutes from Feb., Mar. & April can be approved.

Pete Baehren of 594 East Clear Lake Drive
Pete was born to Paul and Barbara Baehren on 6/22/1957, their 4th child. He grew up in Ottawa Hills and graduated from high school there in 1976. He excelled at football, basketball, and track and field and he still holds the shot put record.
Pete earned a BA in 1981 from the University of Toledo and went on to a career in sales of long term care and life insurance. He was known for his good service and personal attention to his clients.
He vacationed every summer of his 54 years and owned a cottage at 594 East Clear lake
Drive, Clear Lake, IN. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, boating and sharing joyful times with his wife Margaret and children Hunter and Emma.
Pete is also survived by his mother, sisters Connie (Sanford) Johnson and Christine (Andy) Barabasz, brothers Stephen (Debbie) and David (Sonja), and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father.
He died at Hospice of NW Ohio, on April 22, after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Visitation will be at the Walker Funeral Home (link
and guestbook). A memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church the following day. The family suggests contributions be made to Epworth Early Childhood Education Center.

Clear Lake Residents,
I am looking to rent a cottage for the week of June 30, 2012 through July 7, 2012 with my mother Carol Ward. I live in Phoenix, AZ and mom lives in Fort Wayne. Some of you may know mom's sister Marge Disser, as she has owned a Clear Lake cottage for many years. I realize that it is rather late in the game, if you will, to try to secure a cottage, but if anyone knows of an available rental, would you give me a ringy dingy at 602-705-8297.

Received via Alan Brown and the Clear Lake Association is an interesting article
describing the Indiana Division of Fish and Wildlife activities at Clear and Hamilton
Lakes in 2012.
"Northern pike were sampled in March 2012 at Hamilton and Clear lakes by the Indiana Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW). The purpose of the project was to determine if trap nets would be an effective technique to capture pre-spawn pike and to summarize pike population statistics
From March 5-15, 2012 the DFW captured, marked, and released 935 pike at Hamilton and 66 pike from Clear."
For those interested, the full article is posted at

The invasion is here. As I drove around the many "Lake Drives" today, I could not help but notice the very invasive and prevalent presence of GARLIC MUSTARD. This is a plant that if not pulled will produce 200 plants next year and 40,000 the year after. Please do your part. Pull it and compost or dispose of it. (It really pulls out very easily). Fran. we've had a touch of summer (in March) water temp had to be in the low 60's for a few days. While sailing on Weds evening March 28th, I saw kids swimming in swim trunks as well as wake boarders in the marina bay with only their swim suits on !!! It turned back to early spring like weather the last week or so but calling for the 70's again for the weekend. Water temps have dropped back down probably near 50. But that 2 weeks of early summer weather (temps in the 70's/80's) was sure a great way to start the spring !!!!

I accessed the BMV online at www.IN.gov and didn't have any problem changing my address on my auto, boat, and trailer registrations. I went to the Angola BMV branch to do some title work and asked about changing it on my drivers license and they said I needed two documents showing the new address. The letter from the Town could be used as one and a utility bill, bank statement, etc. could be used as the other.

Thank you for reminding bike riders and walkers about the rules of road. They are listed in the Clear Lake Directory but it may be helpful if the rules were stated in the next Clear Lake News Letter. It might help make the roads a little safer for everyone this summer.

Although we're still in FL, we know that when we return to glorious Clear Lake (early May) the first major task will be to re-mulch the landscape (such as it is), a job we've avoided for several years. The situation prompts two questions: (1) Does anyone know where we can purchase dark hardwood mulch in bulk (no bags)? And (2), Can you recommend any worker bee types (high schoolers, college kids, etc.) whom we could hire to do the spreading of the mulch? Any info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

There has been some discussion about the "correct" side of the road for walking and biking at Clear Lake. I did some research and everything I found was the same.. When walking on a road that doesn't have a shoulder, the walker should be on the left side or walking against traffic. Bike riders should ride with the flow of traffic.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Nedine! We are walkers, runners and bike riders but sometimes it is REALLY hard to drive a car around the lake because bikers, walkers and runners think they should stay in the middle or wrong side of the road. If something were to happen, the driver of the car would be at fault even though they were driving where they were supposed to be. Everyone needs to stay on the right side of the road and yield to cars (that are driving at a safe speed) for their safety. Many times we have been forced to follow walkers, runners and bike riders who would not yield to a car. That is not safe for anyone.
Nedine BUCHHOP 778 South Lake 208.108.127.254 Monday, April 02, 2012 10:38:36 AM
I agree with the concept of slower
speeds; however, it would also be helpful and SAFER if walkers and bike riders were on the "correct" side of the road and/or not traveling in the middle of the road or even on BOTH sides of the road. While I agree the road is not a highway, it is a road on which many vehicles--residents and delivery personnel--are traveling.
Lars Flan 1120-4 Lake Drive 69.138.49.254 Thursday, March 29, 2012 11:26:12 PM
As a recent resident for 2 year-round years who routinely walked myself, a dog, a wife and kids around the lake, I am in complete agreement with M. Gecowets. SLOW DOWN Drivers! 25 - 30 mph is WAY too fast, and 20 mph is too fast. One day, if it hasn't already, it will be fatal or life changing. Lake drive has no paved shoulder, and most of the roadway does not even have clearance for two-way traffic. Simply put, there is no margin for driver error! 10 to 15 mph is a much safer speed, but even then, only if the edge of the roadway is clear of pedestrians and animals. Lake Drive is more accurately a paved path between cottages, not a rural highway between you and your cottage or castle. Relax, the martini, merlot, or pilsner will wait for you! And lastly, YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS!

We have had reports of some thefts in the area of Clear Lake. The storage units on 850 E
and a construction trailer were broken in to in the last few weeks.
Please keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles around the lake. The only description we
have gotten so far is possibly a Jeep Cherokee style vehicle, darker in color. That
vehicle was seen in the area of the storage units the night it was broken in to by a
newspaper delivery person.
Thank you for your assistance.

Just a reminder that as you alert various vendors of your new street address at Clear Lake, don't forget your property casualty insurance agent. The change impacts the location of the insured premises and the billing address, if mailed to the Clear Lake location. Also impacts an umbrella policy and perhaps other policies.

We got a new Sunfish two years ago. We are saving the tiller and centerboard of our old one as they were new, but anyone is welcome to look at our old hull. It is not in the best of shape as it needs a little repair on the
fiberglass. It's upside down across the road. Hasn't been cleaned for a couple of years. We purchased it in 1983. My number is 495-9214.

John Barrett has good advice about seeking professional counsel regarding the 3.8% tax on sale of property -- but one key thing to remember is that the $250K - $500K exclusion does NOT apply to a "vacation home" which is the case for a large percentage of property around Clear Lake.

The recent storm that came through the lake area on Monday of this week took out our Sunfish sailboat that our family has enjoyed for 40+ years. Lightning struck the boat as it was being stored on our patio and burnt it beyond use. It is presently sitting on the seawall in front of our cottage if anyone wants to see the power contained in lightning. We will have it removed once the insurance adjuster gets their look.
Does anyone have a good used Sunfish lying around or stored away that is no longer being used and needs a new home? Let me know and I'll make arrangements to view. Thanks

Dear Friends, Family, and Yacht Club Members,
It has been requested by the Yacht Club that the dock go in ASAP at the Yacht Club. It appears that the improvements to the club are coming along nicely. Next will be to get the yard fixed up. Therefore, to allow as much time as possible we are going to try and put the dock in this coming Saturday, March 17th. I was thinking around 11am since the weather is suppose to be so nice, but that depends on when I can get the most help. It technically only takes 2 to put the dock in, but if we can get 4 total it really helps the back. If you or anyone you know is willing to help, please let me know.
Thanks

A lot of activity on the BB this year, soon to be a beautiful spring in our protected area.
We are attempting to get custody of our elderly Mother who needs full time care since an emergency, and probably unnecessary, surgery at 92 years old. As such, we are inquiring if anyone would have hospital bed or similar
motorized bed, lift/hoister, scooter chair, etc., to accommodate frail and partially disabled, cost effective sale, rent or loan re: what seems a short term situation. Suggestions, tips and warnings before the fact are also welcome. Please call Suzy, 495-3211 after 11 a.m. or email: ieshea@frontier.com as phone has been intermittently on fritz, repair in process. We'll also be checking with local agencies, but it's always good to check with those who have gone before... Thanks.

For the information of owners and taxpayers at Clear Lake:
A 3.8 percent levy on certain investment income was included in healthcare legislation two
years ago, and now misinformation about the tax’s application to home sales is being
passed along over the Internet and e-mail, throwing some prospective home sellers into a
panic. In actuality, very few owners will be affected by the new tax taking effect in
2013.
The tax will only be on investment income of upper income taxpayers. Included in the
definition of investment income is capital gains from home sales above a certain amount
and for households whose income is above a certain amount. This means individuals who
make $200,000 a year or more, or married couples who earn at least $250,000 a year are
affected. Additionally, the tax is only applied to home sales if the proceeds exceed
$250,000 for an individual, or $500,000 for married couples. And there still are other
income and tax particulars that are considered before the 3.8 percent tax is triggered.
The National Association of REALTORS® recommends that members become familiar with the
tax, but avoid coaching their clients on the policy because the amount of tax will vary
from individual to individual as the elements that comprise adjusted gross income differ
from taxpayer to taxpayer. NAR has published a brochure on how the tax works, which is now
available online.
Check with your accountant on the impact of this new forthcoming tax and how it will
impact on you should you decide to sell once it takes effect.

A concern that we have at the Marina is trying to find new addresses from the water. Good thing we already know where everyone's cottage is located no matter what the street address is. Will people re-mark their docks? Will the town require it? Emergency personnel will also have the same problem if they have to find something in the water by a street address.

Here are the off-lake streets that will not need re-addressing besides Outer Drive: Chapel Drive, Elm Street, Joann Court, John Court, Penner Drive, and
Powhatten Court. However, not sure of the cottage count on those.
Marty Erlenbaugh 224 Outer Drive 99.188.33.117 Monday, March 05, 2012 08:49:33 AM
According to the letter from the Town Council, if I guess right, there are only a handful (six or seven of us) of unchanged addresses -- all on Outer Drive -- so -- everyone on the lakeside and the other few off-lake properties are effected. It would be great if the Town could produce a map with the new street names and numbering.
A quick search (totally unscientific) with Google shows that towns/cities that had address changes required a town/city ordinance and its passing ... did Clear Lake do so or was it just done capriciously ... however, in the Town's defense, they did provide opportunities for input at meetings in the past.
Final question from me is "With the new codified ordinances, was future street naming addressed"?

I also disagree with these address changes. I was part of the original committee and asked to be removed because I felt that many changes were occurring without the full committee being involved. Even after my request to be removed I received a phone call and again
disagreed. Unfortunately the process continued to move forward. Apparently our opinion doesn't matter.

For the first time in quite awhile I say a cat on our deck recently but it was too dark to see the color. Another recent time I saw one near our red pole barn but it was also too dark then to identify the color. We will keep an eye out for it.

Devon, I just saw the juvenile Bald Eagle. I have been watching ever since you said you had spotted one. Dad was finishing up his fish dinner on the island and Jr. thought that he might get a left-over. Mom and dad both said "No" and after a sort air chase Jr. headed east. A year ago there three juveniles. Hopefully the other two have moved on to establish their own territory.

I agree Bruce. It could stay this way until spring for all I care. I'm sure we're going to get another snow storm or two but It won't last and I don't think the ice will ever be safe enough to really be on when it does freeze over again, if it freezes over again. I think the ground hog got it wrong !! How about a "dock in" contest ?!...............anyone ?? I was thinking about
putting my dock in this weekend, however I may need some help chiseling (I had to Google that word) it out of the ice if we do get a blast of winter. But I'm sure my friends would chip in and help right Bruce ????

Mr. & Mrs. Eagle are perched on the same branch this morning on the North end of the island. With all of the feeding they have been doing I believe that the egg laying season is getting close. It was definitely the Holts who owned the South Shore grocery that Ron referred to. Both Mr. and Mrs. Holt were very nice folks and I do remember them being from Hicksville. They also had a son and I recall seeing on the bulletin board a few years back that he passed away and it may have been posted by Peter Beck. It was a very small store but they had a lot of variety. My best recollection is also the wide assortment of penny candy and they also had soda pop in bottles in one of the old coolers filled with ice - nothing better on a summer day!
John Schenkel

Ron, now that you stretched your
gray matter, you forced mine to re-engage, and you are absolutely correct. The Holt's did own the place, and Bob was a really nice chap. And when I was spending my
pennies there, I am sure I was not too aware of who owned the place being much more concerned with the penny candy selection, but the name Mercer and their son's death does ring a bell. Thanks for you always thoughtful and enlightening insights. The Laub's did own 884 in the 60's, and were from Hicksville also, and had nothing to do with the grocery store but did own an Oldsmobile dealership. Good catch!!!

The photo here is Waggoner's which was also the Horse Shoe Inn.....and the South Shore Grocery a bit more west was Oehler's and then the South Shore. That is what I gleaned from the most recent history book. and there is but the one photo in the book of that one...the one I am looking for in a better quality . I remember when we rented on that shore and spent lots of time and pennies on candy just right across the street!! That original cottage is still there..

John you're going to make me stretch my gray matter a bit, but that's OK! I recall that the original owners (50's) of the South Shore Grocery was a couple named Mencer, Mercer,?? and that they lost a son (Danny) when he fell through thin ice on the lake. His grave is in the Lutheran Church behind the old store. The more recent owners were a couple from Hicksville. I seem to recall (now it's getting hazy) that their name was Holt but I don't remember them having property on the lake or a car dealership in Hicksville. I think his name was Bob and I recall that he was a very nice guy as I always enjoyed talking to him while I was getting my car filled with fuel so I could make my weekly Sunday evening trip back to the Fort. For the record all of the above information is to the best of my knowledge and has not been offered while under oath--

One more thought, wasn't the last owner of the South Shore Grocery Bud Laub, maybe from Hicksville, and he also owned a car dealership in Hicksville? My directories are all at the lake, but I think they may have lived at 884. Now we see how good my memory is!!!

Ron, for a Purdue guy, your memory is still intact. You are absolutely correct. In the 50's when we lived at 888, I spent lots of
pennies there!! They even had fresh cut meat, so it was not just a convenience store.

Just to keep my own memory in tact (getting harder every day), the grocery in the pictures was actually a restaurant and was called the Horse Shoe Inn during the sixties. "The South Shore Grocery" was a single story building located about 1/8 mile to the west. The single story South Shore Grocery is currently owned by David Norton. While the two groceries may have coexisted as some point in time, when I went to the South Shore Grocery I went to the single story building that had living quarters behind rather than on top of the business. Hard to believe that Clear Lake used to support three grocery stores and now we have none!

Round lake is about half frozen right now. What I call "Turtle Bay" (Southwest bay) is completely iced over and we have seen several ice fishermen there in recent days. The swans have been putting around the open water and sunning themselves on the ice. With the snow and cold weather we are expecting, things should start to freeze up fast. We are disappointed about the snow as it does not make for a "good skating freeze"! I'm sure we will figure something out....and once we do come on over for a skate!

Is anyone missing a polydactyl cat? I usually get a good number of half-feral strays in my barn but this one is really nice and since the cat is a Hemingway I was wondering if she was someone's missing pet? Please describe with color and sex. I'll be spay/neutering and keeping the cat if nobody claims it.
Thanks!

I remember Sumo and Joel buzzing around the lake back in 1980 and also remember the "James Gang" Jimmy G, Sumo and "C"
skiing 2 years later. I'm fairly sure everyone warmed themselves in front of the fireplace at "44's" (Ken Fankhauser's) after that and having several drinks. Didn't we also play snow football that year with Shank's? I remember going down the toboggan with Sumo, "C" and Jimmy and my snowmobile pants almost catching on fire from my legs being pressed down on the rail from "C" sitting behind me. Yowzah! John Schekel I do not recall anyone skiing all 12 months, but it did jar my memory to dig out an old photograph of myself skiing on January 1,1980 . I must have left my common sense at home . I convinced "Well ya know" Joel Lockhart to get his Correct Craft Mustang boat out of storage and give me the pull around the lake. I donned a pair of long johns and a wetsuit and
skied 1/2 way around the lake . I had to get in the shower to get out of my wetsuit. There was so much ice on the zipper I could not get out of it. I vowed to never do that bone chilling event again; or so I thought. One to two years later after much convincing ; myself "Sumo", Jim "Geigs" Geiger ,and Craig "C" Fankhauser decided to do it again . Jim even decided to go barefoot in the Marina Bay . I think he later regretted it . The things we do when we are young !

In the just for what it's worth, some twenty years ago, I think that Steven Davis (then or 800 lake Dr) with some buddies did water ski in all twelve months. I am sure there was ice, but it was on and off so fast that the feat could be done. Does anyone else remember those kids doing that?

Ice Contest Folks,
Saw a show on Travel Channel that addressed "Ice Melt Contests." The people interviewed had come up w/ what I thought was a totally objective method to judge. They set up a 3 legged (tripod type) base w/ a 4' pole and flag running vertically through the center. After deciding what area of their lake was most
representative of ice melt, they set the tripod @ that location. When the flag hits the water, the ice is deemed melted, and
winner declared!
Good Luck

I know we usually have an Ice Off contest this year but I am going to start something new (what do you think Bruce Spangler?) although I am counting down the days until we put our dock in already, 84 days from now to be exact. I think we should make a guess as to when the entire lake will freeze over this year, not be safe to be on, just when it will entirely freeze over, except for the occasional Canadian geese areas. I will stick my neck out and say..........Monday January 16th, quite a bit later from normal, but that's my guess. Anyone else care to make a guess on the date for CL ice freeze over ?! Winner will get FAME and GLORY until next years guess, hopefully in December 2012 if you like winter in the North. GOOD LUCK !!
