Kay, this question has come up before. In lieu of walking around the entire lake in everyones front yards. The ice needs to be 95% off the lake. For example, depending on the wind direction, if the east bay is half covered with chopped up (broken) ice, that is not "ice off". However, if the ice is jammed up across a shoreline, not extending out in the lake very far, lets say well within the swim area. That would be considered ice off !! BOTTOM LINE, AS LONG AS A BOAT CAN SAFELY NAVIGATE AROUND CLEAR LAKE (staying out of the swim area) WITHOUT ICE OBSTRUCTIONS,.....ICE OFF !............hows that?
Kay Kummer 844 Lake Drive 71.97.182.205 Saturday, March 13, 2010 11:33:55 AM
Thanks Rick for the definition of when the ice goes off.
For those Eagle watchers out there the pair of Bald Eagles at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens are hatching new eaglets. One hatched on Thursday, number 2 hatched during the night and number 3 is still in the shell. There is a live video feed and lots of information. Since we do not know where our eagles build their nest and have their young, this is a very good website that gets you upclose and personal. www.wvec.com and click on the eagle cam link at the top of the page.

Traditionally, the East Bay basin must be deemed ice-free and open water. Maybe last year's winner should be recruited to be this year's judge. For those that may have forgotten, the prize again this year is "Clear Lake Fame".

Thank you Rita. I found this information helpful:
Why use lawn fertilizer without phosphorus around lakes or streams?
A: It is estimated that just one pound of phosphorus in the water will produce 500 pounds of blue-green algae. Most soils in Eastern South Dakota naturally provide all the phosphorus your established lawn needs. Much of the phosphorus (phosphate) you apply actually runs off the lawn before penetrating the soil. That means it gets into the lakes and streams contributing to the blue-green algae bloom and growth of other undesirable aquatic plants. For this reason, Minnesota now has a statewide ban on the use of lawn fertilizer with phosphorus except on newly seeded lawns and where soil tests show it is needed.
Rita Helmuth 182 Lake Drive 205.188.116.141 Wednesday, March 10, 2010 04:57:30 PM
Update from Water Quality Committee:
Now that the snow is nearly gone and folks are thinking about spring lawn care and returning soon to enjoy the lake, please remember:
*Do not rake/dispose of leaves into the lake
*Do not drain/dispose of oil/antifreeze on lawns or driveways. Clear Lake Marina is happy to take old oil - it is recycled.
*Be conscious of antifreeze going into the lake.
*When purchasing fertilizer, the middle number (phosphorous) needs to be 0
Remind your lawn service to use phosphorous free fertilizer.
When starting a new lawn, it IS necessary to use phosphorous to establish a root system, but once the lawn has been established, phosphorous is not necessary. One alternative could be to plant native grasses. Thank you.

News from the Water Quality Committee:
THE CLEAR LAKE DIET..........
Clear Lake is experiencing EUTROPHICATION !
What is this? Eutrophication is a process by which a lake, pond or stream becomes EUTROPOHIC, as a result of mineral and organic run off from surrounding land. The increased growth of plants and algae that accompanies EUTROPHICATION depletes the dissolved oxygen content of the water and often causes a die-off of other organisms; and the cause of this process is - NUTRIENT OVERLOAD.
Clear Lake is not well nourished, it is nutrient fat !!!!!
To prevent EUTROPHICATION we must reduce the nutrient intake of Clear Lake and put our lovely lake on a diet !
Stay tuned for more on .........The Clear Lake Diet.

Ceilings dusted with long handled duster first, then wipe walls, etc., working downward... cover piano with sheets that will be available, etc. Rainbow water-tank sweeper on site. Mostly... just use products supplied and get all the toxic dust from tile and cement board off all surfaces, especially tops of woodwork and cupboard doors and back inside all nooks and crannies, and maybe inside cupboards wherever you see it has accumulated. Evan will be taking all window trim down for washing with fragrance-free Oxyclean and baking soda. Otherwise the remaining debris will be outgassing whatever noxious components like formaldehyde, arsenic and whatever else is in the tile and board

I love reading the reports of the ice boating conditions and the ice shanties in front of the condos. Back in the early 1950's, when my
parents, Buzz and Louise Anderson were among the first year round lakers, my dad loved to ice boat and when the fishing shanties went up, he gave us weekly reports of who had caught what and how many. Winter at Clear Lake was a wonderful
experience for them, along with my Aunt Lib and Uncle Bob Hanna. We have terrific pictures of the great blizzards, with the snow several feet deep. So glad the fun goes on!!

There is a dulcimer jam at the Angola Library Monday night Feb 1st, at 6PM. Bring your dulcimer (or just come and listen) and have a fun evening playing lots of good music. If you have always wanted to learn how to play a dulcimer, the friendly people there will be glad to show you how. Other string instruments are also welcome to join in the fun.

Joe, we were up over the weekend and in front of our place the ice was 6" plus. I'm not sure about the middle of the lake from the Island to the East shore because it froze over last (JAN 2nd) but I did see a few
shanties and ice fisherman out in the middle this weekend. There has been ATV and snowmobile tracks on the ice too. The rain we had Sunday
definitely smoothed things out and absolutely no snow left on the lake. With the temps this week you might be right about a favorable ice boating weekend. I would check with a few more fisherman before venturing out or maybe someone else will post. John Barrett ice boats too, he might be someone to check with for more info on the ice conditions.
p.s. Round lake had 8" plus ice as of Saturday.

Just checking on ice conditions for ice boating. Can anyone tell me what the ice thickness is and if the ice is clean of snow? Based on the recent warm spell and upcoming cold spell,

An update from the Water Quality Committee:
We are working to protect our lake and its watershed.
The Clear Lake Township Land Conservancy was awarded a $45,000 Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) grant this past July. The LARE grant money comes from funds collected by the State
every time you register your boat. The 2009 grant money is for a Feasibility/Design study to address the brown milky plume that enters the lake from the Cyrus Brouse Ditch after any rain event. The feasibility portion of the study is 85% complete. The Davey Resource Group is our consultants on the project.
Stay tuned to the Clear Lake Bulletin Board for more water quality news.

From the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette
Ex-Clear Lake official killed in snowy crash
Holly Abrams The Journal Gazette
A former Clear Lake official died Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash near Fremont.
Robert Troll, 79, died at the crash scene from internal injuries, according to Steuben
County sheriff’s deputies.
He served for 6 1/2 years on the Clear Lake Town Council – five of those years as
president, until his resignation in 2004 for health reasons.
Deputies said Troll was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed just before 11:30 a.m. on
County Road 50 West, just north of County Road 535 North, west of Fremont. The vehicle,
driven by his wife, Judy Troll, 77, was northbound on County Road 50 West when she lost
control because of snow and slush on the road, deputies said.
The Trolls’ vehicle went left of center and collided with a minivan that was southbound.
The driver of the minivan, Shawntee Nusbaum, 27, of West Otter Lake, was not injured.
Judy Troll suffered minor head and shoulder injuries. She was taken to Cameron Memorial
Community Hospital in Angola, where she was treated and released the same day.
The crash remains under investigation, deputies said. No citations have been filed.
Bob Lewis, current president of Clear Lake Town Council, said he knew the Trolls for more
than 20 years. The couple were longtime lake residents, he said.
“(Robert) was instrumental with me getting into the political arena,” Lewis said. “He had
a tremendous work ethic. He was a very respected man, … not only around Clear Lake but all
around Steuben County.”
Robert Troll was retired from National Mill Supply, sales and marketing, and was a past
director of the United Way of Steuben County.
He is the second former Clear Lake Town Council president to die in a car crash in less
than a month.
John “Jack” McArdle, 69, and his wife, Karen, 63, of Auburn, died in a single-vehicle
wreck in DeKalb County Dec. 11. John McArdle succeeded Robert Troll as Clear Lake Town
Council president, serving from 2004 to 2007.
“This is just so odd,” Lewis said. “It’s one of those freak things that happen.”

Staff Reports - Herald Republican
Friday, 08 January 2010 12:07
FREMONT — For the second time in less than a month, a former Clear Lake Town Council
president has died in a wreck.
Robert Troll, 79, Clear Lake, died in a wreck on C.R. 50W near Feather Valley Road in
rural Fremont at about 11:25 a.m. Friday.
Troll was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his wife, Judy, 77, when she lost control of
their vehicle on the slushy road and collided with a mini-van driven by Shawtee Nusbaum,
27, Angola.
Troll was declared dead at the scene from internal injuries by Coroner Rodney Snyder. Judy
Troll was taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, Angola, for treatment of her
injuries, which Steuben County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Kevin Kane said were not
life threatening.
Nusbaum was not injured.

Angie O'Neil, I thought about you today while I was home for lunch. Mrs. Bald Eagle was on the island (don't know where the Mr. was) when a small flock of Coots arrived on the open water in front of our cottage. They should have been paying more attention because Mrs. Eagle has not been on the hunt for a few days and must have been very hungry. She swooped down on one unsuspecting coot for lunch and after 4 or 5 passes she flew in really low, the coot popped up just in time to be snagged by Mrs. Eagle. She sat on the coot in the water for quite some time before flying the short distance to the edge of the ice to de-frock the subject and partake of the tender little morsel. The crows were waiting patiently in the wings for any leftovers, but I believe they were sorely disappointed. We see this happen occasionally, and it is a
awesome sight. We love the lake, wish you could have seen it.

Dan, Thanks for the info about Molly and friend. I just hope they don't get hit in the road or go through the ice like our dog did a few years ago. We almost lost Lady in the
icy water but were able to get her out just in time. The lake can be a very dangerous place for dogs in the winter. We keep our kayak handy in case we need to push it out on the ice for a rescue. If I see Molly and her friend again, I will call Sullins.
